Magic Band Update

Disney Makes Important Update to Magic Bands

If you’re family is like us and you make frequent visits to Walt Disney World Resort hotels, the scene above is probably a familiar one. Living in Orlando gives us the opportunity to easily camp for the weekend or spend a night several times a year. However, a new set of Magic bands arrives in the mail for each and every reservation whether you need them or not. While it’s exciting at first to collect all the colors and imagine the color coordination possibilities, eventually enough is enough. We’ve felt bad at what a waste it seems to be for a whole new set of bands to be sent each time when we all have a couple dozen extra to spare.

Disney has recently made an important change that will eliminate that problem and hopefully keep a few million Magic Bands out of landfills (or my closet) over the coming years. Guest now have the option to opt out of receiving Magic Bands via their My Disney Experience account. For now, you need to opt out for each upcoming reservation. Also, you can always change your mind and opt back in if you if you realize you’ve lost your Magic band, one stops working or you finally have a shirt that will go well with the orange.

Good work Disney! The Magic Band and My Disney Experience system just keeps getting better. Now, if we could just get charging privileges tied to our bands even when we’re not staying on property I’d be dangerous at Food & Wine Festival!

Chad Nykamp

Husband, father and lover of all things Disney. Like every kid, I loved Disney and the couple trips I took to Disney World in my early years are good memories. But my obsession began in 2004 when we made our first family visit. It's hard to believe that we almost cancelled the trip because it seemed like a lot of work with 3 very little kids. We were hooked by the end of the first day. By day 3 we were planning our next trip back. By day 5 we were doing the math on DVC. And by the end of the vacation everyone was crying the blues that we had to leave. Since then, Disney World has become our favorite vacation destination, a hobby and now a home. We love the detail of the story telling and the memories of time spent with friends and family.
