DISNEY NEWS ROUNDUP: Jungle Cruise Makeover; New Details on Flower & Garden Festival; Blizzard Beach Opening; New Foodie Guide; Celebrate Soulfully Begins; Cruise Updates; Anniversary Celebration & More

The past week was a busy week at Disney. Disney made a big announcement about changes coming to the Jungle Cruise at both Disney World and Disneyland and released new information on the upcoming Flower & Garden Festival at Epcot. Don’t miss the new “Celebrate Soulfully” beginning February 1, taking place at Epcot, Disney Springs, and beyond. Water park fun is almost back. We have details on tickets and update health and safety policies. We also have food and gift guides for the Valentine’s Day season around Disney World. Speaking of food, there are a couple of really cool specialty food events coming up at some Disney Springs restaurants that are worth checking out. There is a Disney Cruise Line update, Disney Vacation Club is celebrating a significant anniversary, and some cool merchandise offerings. All this and more in this week’s news roundup below.

1 – Jungle Cruise to Receive Updates at Walt Disney World and Disneyland

The classic attraction, the Jungle Cruise, will be receiving an update including a new storyline later this year at both Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Park. Learn more below.

Click here for the announcement of the updates coming to the Jungle Cruise.

Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Portfolio Executive Chris Beatty discussed the upcoming update with D23. Here are a few excerpts from the interview that give more information about the forthcoming changes. Click here for the full interview.

Can you talk about why you decided to make these new updates?

We are constantly evaluating ways to enhance attractions and experiences in our parks. We want to make sure everybody has the best time—that guests from all over the world can connect with the stories we share and that how we bring those to life are respectful of the diverse world we live in. And when they get off the attraction, they know that we have done our homework because these are the details that matter. When you look at the Jungle Cruise, as it is today, there are just a couple of scenes that don’t do that and needed a refresh. But I want to make sure people know we are not changing the whole Jungle Cruise. This is not a re-envisioning of the entire attraction. It’s the Jungle Cruise you know and love, with the skippers still leading the way, and at the same time, we’re addressing the negative depictions of “natives.” So that’s one of the scenes we’re going to go in and change.

I feel like there is sometimes, perhaps, misplaced concern that when an attraction is reimagined that it is somehow not going to be as great as it was before. How do you address that?

First off, we love our fans. You could ask any Imagineer why we do what we do, and it really is to bring a smile to our fans’ faces. And we’re cautious, because we know that any time we go in to make changes, especially to a classic attraction, some may worry it’s going to lose its magic. To make sure it doesn’t, we do our homework. First, we are really leaning into our skippers. Kevin Lively, who is a writer at Imagineering, is actually a former skipper and is the writer for our show. So any changes that we are making are actually being written by a former skipper. The role the skippers play is a significant part of this attraction experience—their performance and how they bring it to life is something we all love. They are deeply passionate about this attraction, too. We want to make sure we get the skippers on board, no pun intended, and that they feel like they have some ownership in this. So that was step one.

Second was to bring together a diverse project team. We wanted to make sure that any changes we made from a relevancy standpoint were done right. So we’ve been working with Carmen Smith [executive for Creative Development and Inclusive Strategies] and her team within Imagineering to make sure that any time we show something culturally significant, that is done in the proper light. It’s done in a way that celebrates diverse backgrounds and interests—that’s part of the rich storytelling, not something you poke fun at it.

When introducing new elements—even animals—we make sure they’re done in a respectful way. We reached out to Dr. Mark Penning and his team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and said, “Look, we have these chimpanzees that are coming into this new world and we want to have fun with them. How do we make sure it’s done in an authentic way for the chimpanzees?” We want to have fun, but we’re not making fun of the animals. His team had great insights and it really elevated that new scene.

And the last part is really looking back to the source material. We went back and looked at original Marc Davis sketches. We pulled out his work and looked at what makes this scene funny, and what are some of the scenes that Marc developed that didn’t make it? It’s really important to go back—especially on a classic attraction—and look at the DNA and what really makes the attraction work. What makes it funny? What makes it fun for our guests? And part of that is going back to Marc’s humor and his storytelling. And Kevin is brilliant at that. Kevin does an amazing job finding that right tone that has that Marc Davis quality to it.

Is there a timeline for the enhancements?

We haven’t announced a date yet. We’re working hard to make sure we can get everything in this year.

6 – Disney Cruise Line Extends Cruise Suspension to Late Spring

Unfortunately, Disney Cruise Line has extended its suspension of cruising to late spring. Here is the updated statement from the Disney Cruise Line website:

Disney Cruise Line Extends Suspension of All Departures Through April and Select Disney Magic and Disney Wonder Sailings in May

Our team at Disney Cruise Line remains focused on the health and well-being of our Guests and team members. We are carefully preparing for a return to service following the guidelines issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As we continue to refine our protocols and await further technical guidance from the CDC, we are cancelling all sailings departing through April 2021 and select sailings onboard the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder in May.

Sailings are cancelled aboard the Disney Fantasy through April 24; the Disney Dream through April 30; the Disney Magic through May 9; and the Disney Wonder through May 12.

Additionally, as previously shared, based on the conditional sail order provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Disney Cruise Line must cancel sailings longer than 7 nights.

Guests booked on affected sailings who have paid their reservation in full will be offered the choice of a cruise credit to be used for a future sailing or a full refund. Guests who have not paid their reservations in full will automatically receive a refund of what they have paid so far. Affected Guests and travel agents will receive an email from Disney Cruise Line outlining details and next steps.

Guests who’ve booked their reservation through a travel agent should contact them directly with any questions. Those who’ve booked directly with Disney Cruise Line and have questions after receiving their email should call (866) 325-6685 or (407) 566-7797.

7 – Updated Face Covering Policy at Walt Disney World Resort

With more Americans receiving a COVID-19 vaccine, Disney has clarified that it will still require face coverings for all guests when visiting the resort. Here is the updated policy from the Walt Disney World website:

Face coverings are required for all Guests (ages 2 and up) and Cast Members, including those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Please bring your own face coverings and wear them at all times, except when dining or swimming. You may remove your face covering while actively eating or drinking, but you must be stationary and maintain appropriate physical distancing.

All face coverings (whether disposable or reusable) must:

    • Be made with at least 2 layers of breathable material
    • Fully cover the nose and mouth and secure under the chin
    • Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
    • Be secured with ties or ear loops and allow the Guest to remain hands-free

At this time, based on guidance from health authorities, neck gaiters, open-chin triangle bandanas and face coverings containing valves, mesh material or holes of any kind are not acceptable face coverings.

Costume masks are also not considered appropriate and are prohibited from being worn, in alignment with our existing rules.

Face coverings may have an integrated transparent plastic panel to aid in viewing the wearer’s mouth. These face coverings must:

    • Be a fabric face covering featuring a solid plastic panel containing no openings that is attached to the fabric on all sides using tight knit stitching
    • Meet all face covering requirements listed above

The use of face coverings is not a substitute for physical distancing.
