5 Reasons to Experience ‘Ohana Dinner at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

Aloha! Are you on the hunt for a delicious meal and superb experience? Look no further! Here are 5 reasons we think everyone needs to experiencing dinner at Disney’s Polynesian’s ‘Ohana.

1 – Hawaiian Paradise

Whether you are staying at the spectacular Disney Polynesian Resort or stopping by for a visit, ‘Ohana should be on your list of must-do dining! The moment you enter the Polynesian Resort, you are greeted with an “Aloha” and a smile. Surrounded by dim lighting, exotic plants, vibrant colors, and unique details, the atmosphere will take you away to a Hawaiian paradise. Head upstairs to check-in for your dinner reservation at ‘Ohana and await to be called by a conch shell! Get ready for the bountiful food, storytelling, and games!

2 – Hawaiian Taste of Heaven

Hawaiian-flavored specialties served family-style are what’s on this all you care to enjoy menu! You’ll start off with pineapple-coconut bread which, if we could purchase in bulk, we would. Skewers of sweet and sour chicken, steak, and shrimp will appear as the servers make their way to your table right from the fire pit oven. They will also deliver large bowls of vegetables, noodles, salad, chicken wings, and dumplings (our favorite!). The food never stops coming either, so eat until your heart (or belly) is content. You will definitely want to save room, however, for their specialty dessert – bread pudding à la mode with bananas-caramel sauce… OH MY GOODNESS, this stuff is heaven! Adults are welcome to take advantage of the bar (Tambu Lounge), which serves up some delicious, tropical drinks to your liking. Please, do yourself a favor and make advanced dining reservation for ‘Ohana dinner. Reservations go quickly, so book the moment you can (180 days in advance) because ‘Ohana is worth it.

3 – ‘Ohana Means Family

Lilo and Stitch have it right – ‘Ohana does mean family! ‘Ohana is the perfect place to bring your family and friends alike. Our kids love seeing the huge fire in the oven, which serves as a centerpiece to the restaurant. As you eat, family fun activities will be taking place around you, typically led by “Auntie.” Auntie will have the kids race around – sweeping coconuts with their brooms across the restaurant floor. We’ve experience hula dance instructions to Hawaiian music, where the kids were invited to ask a family member to come dance with them. It’s a sweet moment when mom and son have a get to dance together. Watch out – hula hoops may be added to the fun! The exceptional service at ‘Ohana stands above even other Disney restaurants, in our opinion. Cast Members seem to be enjoying themselves as they go about bringing food and refreshments time and time again. Cast Members inviting children and adults for some time of play are just as encouraging and fun. You’ll leave feeling like you’ve just added some “cousins” to the family tree. It’s definitely all about family at ‘Ohana!

4 – Special Notes

With the large tables present at ‘Ohana, ‘Ohana is one of our favorite restaurants to dine at when or large family is present (19 of us!). As mentioned above, especially with large groups, book at the earliest moment possible. Another special note – try to book your dinner reservation roughly 45 minutes before the Wishes Nighttime Spectacular (Fireworks) takes place at Magic Kingdom. You’ll be glad you did with the fantastic view from ‘Ohana – especially if you ask to be seated near a window!

5 – Polynesian Perks

Before or after (or both!), be sure you take some time to enjoy the Polynesian Resort while you a visiting for dinner. The Polynesian has one of our favorite gifts shops, BouTiki, which has some of the most unique souvenirs! You’ll also want to check out the Polynesian’s beach, see the incredible new bungalows, and maybe even stay to watch some of the Electrical Water Pageant. You’ll especially love the view of Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom, which you’ll spot the moment you walk out the back sliding doors towards the beach/pool area. If you aren’t too full, stop by the Pineapple Lanai for a famous Dole Whip. Or have a seat in the lobby and enjoy your surroundings!

‘Ohana easily falls into our family’s top 5 list of favorite dining experiences at Disney, and we hope you too have a chance to enjoy this restaurant. If you have dined at ‘Ohana before, we’d love to hear about your experience!

About Mike & Jamie Sylvester

We are Disney nerds. Two kids at heart who love the magic and the memories of Walt Disney World! We follow all things Disney and have great experiences with being Annual Passholders, Disney Vacation Club Members, and RunDisney participants. We enjoy the vacations, day trips, weekend getaways and geek out over the planning of such events. From lodging to dining to Fastpasses we have a spreadsheet for every occasion. Mike’s frivolous Disney goal is to acquire as many MagicBands as possible while Jamie’s goal is to experience as many Disney desserts as possible. Usually there isn’t a day that passes without some discussion of the master plan of our next trip to the happiest place on earth. Most people think we’re normal – until they travel to Disney with us. We have been married for 13 years and are blessed with two children - our 8-year-old daughter and soon to be 2-year-old son. As a family we thoroughly enjoy the magic and the memories at Walt Disney World and are here to help others experience the magic as well.
