By Christy Caby

Aladdin is an amazing animated feature film from the Disney collection.  The movie won various awards and the characters have maintained popularity through the years.  The ride isn’t a “thrill” ride, but it is still a lot of fun and one that the whole family can enjoy.  Here are 7 facts and secrets about the Magic Carpets of Aladdin in Adventureland:

7 – The two golden camels were originally part of a parade.

You will notice the two golden camels at the attraction.  These two camels were actually originally built to be a part of the Aladdin parade at Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios).  The camels were moved to the entrance of the Soundstage Restaurant for a while and then found their permanent home at the Magic Carpets of Aladdin once it opened.

6 – The camels actually spit

So not only have these camels been well traveled, but they also spit at guests.  One of the camels is posed to spit at guests as they are walking by the attraction.  The other camel is posed to spit at guests that are actually riding the attraction.  For the camel to be able to spit on you, you have to keep your magic carpet about mid-way up.  If you want to ensure you avoid getting wet, then go all the way to the top once your controls start.

Magic Carpets of Aladdin

5 – First Aladdin attraction and area to be created.

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin opened in 2001 along with the Agrabah Bazaar area.  This area is the first and only Agrabah themed area to help immerse guests into what it might have been like to shop on the streets of Agrabah.  The attraction is the first permanent Aladdin attraction.  It is very similar to Dumbo the Flying Elephant in how it operates and creates another ride for guests in the area to help offload some of the crowds and wait times from the classic Adventureland attractions.

4 – The first new attraction added to Adventureland in almost 28 years.

The addition of the Magic Carpets of Aladdin was a way to add more to Adventureland and another attraction that was easy to assemble and add to the area to provide more for the guests to do and experience while in Adventureland.  There isn’t a ton of room to expand in this area and there hadn’t been a completely new attraction added since Pirates of the Caribbean opened in December of 1973 (almost 28 years!).  It was time for something new to be added to the area while making use of the space that was available within Adventureland.

3 – Pay attention to the centerpiece of the attraction.

The center focal point of the attraction is actually pretty neat.  It is a huge genie bottle that has characters from the movie all over it.  It is a great to see some of the familiar characters and faces from the movie in the ride since that is really the only place where you see them in the entire attraction. It helps relate the attraction back to the basis of the ride and remember the beloved characters from the movie.

2 – There are controls in each seat and they do different things.

The ride in theory is very similar to Dumbo the Flying Elephant, but some aspects are very different.  There are actually 2 rows of seating in each carpet as opposed to the 1 row in each elephant on Dumbo.  There is only 1 control on Dumbo which allows you to go up and down.  On Magic Carpets of Aladdin, there are two controls since each row of seating has their own joystick.  One control allows you to move up and down as you wish.  The other one tilts the carpet forward and back for a different kind of experience.  You can either ride in any one position or you can constantly move your carpet while you fly through the air.  It definitely gives you more control over your ride experience and let you have a little bit different of an experience than you can on other attractions. The front row of seats control the height, which the back row gets the control for the tilt effect.

1 – Key ride facts:

  • Opening Day: May 24, 2001
  • Minimum Height Restrictions: None
  • Ride Duration: Around 1.5 minutes
  • Rider Swap: Not available
  • Ride Photo: None
  • FastPass+ Available: Yes
