BREAKING NEWS: Disney Confirms Opening Timeframe for Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at Epcot

Epcot is in the middle of a massive reimagining and completely overhaul of Disney World’s second oldest park. The project is a lot more than just a facelift. The new Epcot will feature a new neighborhood concept to replace Future World and will include many new attractions including Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, a rollercoaster with some seriously innovative technology. We’ve been not so patiently waiting, Disney has finally narrowed down the opening date for us. Full details below.

Here are all the details from Zach Riddley, Creative Portfolio Executive – New Experience Development, Walt Disney Imagineering:

What a week this is for EPCOT! Tomorrow we’ll mark the official grand opening for Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure and La Crêperie de Paris in the newly expanded France pavilion in World Showcase. And then tomorrow night we’ll see the grand premiere of our new nighttime spectacular, “Harmonious,” on World Showcase Lagoon.

And while I’m so excited for you to discover all those new experiences, there’s even MORE in store as we continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort over the next 18 months. This morning, I announced our next major attraction, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, will debut in 2022. That’s right, our friends from Xandar will open the first “other-world” showcase pavilion at EPCOT next year, inviting us on an intergalactic chase through space and time!

Today my fellow Imagineers Tom Fitzgerald (left) and Scot Drake (right) gave us a new look inside the Wonders of Xandar pavilion currently under construction. Here you see them in the Galaxarium, which when completed will feature a planetarium-type presentation where the Xandarians show us their world, their people and their advanced technologies.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a family-friendly adventure, featuring a totally new type of roller coaster experience we’re developing just for this attraction – it’s a storycoaster that rotates 360 degrees so you’re always focused on all the action as you help the Guardians save the galaxy. Not only that, but Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind will also feature the first reverse launch on a coaster in Disney history and is one of the longest enclosed coasters in the world. It’s a massive experience that will match the scale and adventure of the Guardians of the Galaxy films.

As part of the ongoing transformation of EPCOT, we’re infusing this park we love and cherish with more ways to dream, to be inspired and to connect with our world – or other galaxies, in this case. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is going to be a big step in that direction, and we can’t wait for you to experience it. Keep following along with me, @thezachriddley on Instagram, as we chronicle this amazing new attraction and all that’s happening at EPCOT.

Epcot is a truly unique theme park thanks to its two parts, which each celebrate different things. Future World celebrates the strange, yet essential, unity of nature and technology and World Showcase features a global celebration through eleven separate pavilions, each representing a different country from around the world. Guests who spend time in Epcot can enjoy many various pavilions that feature attractions, dining, shopping, and entertainment and spend hours merely taking it all in.

Part of what makes Epcot such a fantastic theme park is it’s in-depth attention to detail, which helps to transport guests to different places in time, space, imagination, and the World. Guests who spend time in Epcot love to discover hidden secrets in the park, which may feature Hidden Mickeys, historical facts and tidbits, tributes to previous Epcot attractions, or cultural traditions. With so many great secrets and details to enjoy, here are seven of the best secrets of Epcot.

1 – A Horizons Tribute

Guests who are looking for big thrills in Epcot can head over to Mission: SPACE to enter into the International Space Training Station for their chance to blast off to Mars. The attraction features both a more intense and tamer version, allowing all guests to enjoy the adventure without feeling ill. Those who are brave enough to ride soon find themselves assigned the role of either pilot, engineer, navigator, or commander and on their way through a series of events and challenges to safely land on Mars. Before Mission: SPACE existed in Epcot, the site used to be home to Horizons, an attraction which focused on sharing with guests different scenarios of the future. When Horizons originally opened, it had its very own logo, which can still be spotted today in the middle of the massive gravity wheel found in the first indoor room of Mission: SPACE’s queue.

2 – Dream Catcher

The Imagination! Pavilion in Future World is home to an attraction that helps guests realize the importance of the imagination and how it works best when set free. Journey into Imagination with Figment invites guests on a tour of the sensory labs of the Imagination Institute led by Dr. Nigel Channing. Soon enough, Figment the purple dragon interrupts the tour and adds some imaginative touches. When the attraction initially opened, it starred Figment and his friend DreamFinder who traveled around the world collecting imagination in his Dream Catcher. While DreamFinder can no longer be found on the attraction today, part of his Dream Catcher can still be spied as décor high up near the ceiling in nearby Mouse Gears.

3 – A Special Address

Living with the Land in The Land Pavilion in Future World aims to teach guests all about the importance and versatility of the land we survive on. Guests board boats and set sail first moving through a series of different settings that demonstrate how the land can thrive in all sorts of extreme environments. During this portion of the attraction, guests move through a scene depicting a typical farm life, including a traditional farmhouse with a dog waiting on the porch. As the boats approach the house, guests can spot that the number on the mailbox is eighty-two. Living with the Land and Epcot fans will recognize that this is an homage to the fact that both the attraction and park opened in 1982.

4 – Saint George

Each pavilion in World Showcase celebrates the culture and history of its country through details, architecture, cuisine, entertainment, and atmosphere. The Germany Pavilion is designed to make guests feel as though they have traveled to a quaint town in the countryside, complete with a small town square. Guests who enjoy the ambiance of the Germany Pavilion will notice a fountain in the center of the square with a figure on top of a large pole in the center. The figure is a representation of St. George, who, according to German tradition, slayed a dragon to save a princess. Many towns in Germany feature a likeness of St. George to offer protection to their people, and the Germany Pavilion in Epcot is no exception.

5 – A Fishy Tribute

One of the largest pavilions in Epcot’s Future World is The Seas with Nemo and Friends, which invites guests to dive deep into the oceans and explore with Nemo and other classic characters from the hit Pixar film Finding Nemo. The pavilion features an attraction of the same name, and as guests enter into the indoor queue, they first pass through a room designed to look just like a beach. Located in this room is a sign with the address 1401 Coral Coastal Highway, which might seem like a fictional address but pays tribute to Walt Disney Imagineering, which is located at 1401 Flower Street in Glendale California.
