You can now visit a galaxy far, far away at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, the highly anticipated new land inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios is now open! But wait! Before you travel through the far reaches of space to Black Spire Outpost, on the planet of Batuu, you need a briefing on how to enter the largest and most technologically advanced single-themed land expansion ever in a Disney park. Catch everything you need to know about entering Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge below.
1 – Download the Official Disney World Apps
The first thing you want to do before your arrival is to make sure you have two Walt Disney World apps installed on your phone or “datapad.” First, if you haven’t already, you’ll want to download the My Disney Experience App. Not only is this app a must for any Walt Disney World vacation, the app will give you updates on the current land status of Galaxy’s Edge, allow you to enter a boarding party (see #2), and allow you to make reservations for certain experiences in the land (see #3).
The second app you’ll want to have is the Play Disney Parks App. There are features of the app that you can unlock inside Galaxy’s Edge will take your experience to a whole new level. There are so many activities you can enjoy through the app that will bring Black Spire Outpost to life. Click here for more information.
2 – Entering Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge & the Virtual Queue
Entering Galaxy’s Edge is subject to capacity. There will be times when you will be required to join a virtual queue to enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Back when Pandora – The World of Avatar opened in 2017, there were waits of several hours just to get into the land. Lines formed and people had to wait in a physical line to enter. Learning from that opening, Walt Disney World has now instituted a virtual queue so that you can enjoy the rest of Disney’s Hollywood Studios and not have to stand in a physical line.
After entering Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the first thing you want to do is check your My Disney Experience App about the land status. If the land is at capacity, you’ll be invited to join a “boarding party.” It will give you an estimate of when you will be able to “board” or enter the land. On opening day at 7:30 am, the boarding estimate was already set for “afternoon.” Note that if you do not have a smartphone you can visit a Guest Experience Team kiosk too access the virtual queue and join a boarding party.
You have two hours to enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge once your boarding group is called. This is great because if you are in line for another attraction, or are enjoying a meal, you don’t need to drop everything and run over to Galaxy’s Edge. When you are ready to enter, go to the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge entrance located on Grand Avenue near Muppet*Vision 3D. Once you are in the land, there is no time limit to enjoy Black Spire Outpost, other than the operating hours of the park.
There are in-park signs and you can check the app to see which boarding group is currently being admitted. You can also visit any Guest Experience Team kiosk at Disney’s Hollywood Studios for questions and assistance. Note that being assigned a boarding group does not guarantee entrance to the land, its attractions or its experiences. At all times the land is subject to capacity and they may hold boarding parties until other guests have departed. It is possible that later boarding parties may not be called.
3 – Reservations for Experiences
There are specific experiences in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge that reservations are strongly recommended (and basically required) due to popularity. These include Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers, Oga’s Cantina, and Droid Depot. If you want to ensure you can take part in these activities, you’ll want to make a reservation using the My Disney Experience App or by clicking above. While standby is a possibility, it is unlikely you’ll be able to enjoy those experiences without a reservation. Note that reservations to these experiences do guarantee you access into the land. If you have a reservation, you can enter the land up to one hour before your reservation time, and you do not need to join the virtual queue. Simply head to the Grand Avenue entrance for admittance.
