TRAVEL LOG: Day 5 – Part 2 of Our Pixar Day at Sea Cruise on the Disney Fantasy

Even when you’re inside the Disney bubble, sometimes things don’t go as planned. That was the case for us on the fifth day or our Pixar Day at Sea cruise on the Disney Fantasy. Day 5 was supposed to be our second private island day at Disney Castaway Cay. Unfortunately, the weather and ocean weren’t cooperating. Due to strong winds and currents, both moving away from the dock at Castaway Cay, the crew were unable to get the ship to the pier safely and after a couple tries were forced to cancel our call at the island.

We still had a great day. In addition to more time to explore and relax, we also had the chance to try an incredible adult only experience in the afternoon. In the evening, we enjoyed the last of our Broadway-style shows. This turned out to be a pretty busy day, so once again we’re going to split this into two parts. In part 1 we covered more of the exploring we did on the ship along with a fantastic experience we had with one of the adults only experienced offered. In part 2, were covering the final evening of our Pixar Day at Sea cruise.

As disappointing as missing Castaway Cay was, another day to enjoy all the wonderful Disney Fantasy has to offer is a pretty good Plan B!

Learn more about our unplanned sea day below.

1 – Sweet On You

After our adult beverage tasting and seminar we decided it something sweet would be the perfect follow up. If you’re looking for sweet options, then head to Sweet on You ice cream shop on Deck 11 aboard the Disney Fantasy. This sweet shop is themed after the iconic Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts and designed with charming art details. The ice cream shop’s décor features the fab five, including Donald, Goofy, and Daisy, and a photo op with Mickey and Minnie enjoying a sweet treat.

Sweet on You offers a variety of hand-crafted gelato, and ice cream flavors with specialty sundaes topped with whipped cream, sweet sauces, and a plethora of toppings served fresh daily. Specialty sundaes are served in exclusive bowls themed to Mickey and Minnie’s colorful, whimsy attire.

Signature milkshakes such as Chocolate Fudge Brownie and Caramel Waffle Cone, as well as decadent treats including raspberry macaroons and chocolate-dipped marshmallows, join the assortment of handcrafted truffles, cupcakes and specialty brownies offered.

2 – Royal Court

After a fantastic sea day, it was time to get cleaned up and get ready for dinner. This was our first dinner at Royal Court, a dining location inspired by Disney classics “Cinderella,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Sleeping Beauty.” The décor features ornate details and custom furnishings and fixtures that incorporate iconic symbols from the films: glass slippers, apples, roses and tiaras.

At Royal Court, custom lighting fixtures modeled after Cinderella’s coach adorn the room. With careful attention to detail, the Royal Court’s chandeliers, chair backs, and columns with marble bases and fluted tops are fashioned after those seen in Beauty and the Beast. Wall sconces, decorative patterns, throne-style chairs, and the circular floor plan are recreated from Cinderella.

Royal Palace décor includes a hand-blown centerpiece chandelier with glass slippers accents, luxurious custom carpeting with a pattern of flourishing roses, and ornate marble floors—including a “family crest” of inlay featuring a tiara crown, a glass slipper, rose, and apple. The Royal Palace’s circular floor plan, fluted columns, and iron railing work are recreated from the “Cinderella” ballroom scene. Wall sconces are fashioned after those in “Beauty and the Beast.” Hand-crafted mosaic tile murals of the princesses—Cinderella, Snow White, Belle, and Sleeping Beauty (Aurora) —and their princes grace the far wall.

3 – Frozen: A Musical Spectacular

Following dinner, we enjoyed the last of our Broadway-style production at the Walt Disney Theater. “Frozen, A Musical Spectacular” is based on the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen,” which is the No. 1 animated feature of all time. The acclaimed film earned two Academy Awards (2014) for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. The show follows the adventure of royal sisters Anna and Elsa as they embark on a journey to discover the meaning of sisterhood, inner strength, and true love. Fans of the film and newcomers alike will be enchanted by favorite characters brought to life onstage along with beautiful renditions of the movie’s iconic music.

The show features dynamic costumes and sets, remarkable special effects, and spectacular production numbers that delight Disney Cruise Line guests in new and surprising ways. The creative disciplines blend to create a seamless environment – blurring the lines between costume and scenic, set piece and video, puppet and puppeteer – and expand upon the most imaginative elements of the film.

A stand-out moment, the emblematic ballad “Let it Go” is transformed into a full-fledged stage spectacle. Complete with real-life magic – transformative scenery, snow flurries, and state-of-the-art video technology – this show-stopping number brings Elsa’s enchanted icy blasts to reality like never before.

Tip: Arrive even earlier for this popular show. At 7:55 pm, there was already a long line to get into the theater. Every seat was taken by about 8:20 pm for an 8:30 pm showtime.

5 – See You Real Soon

On the final night of every Disney cruise, you can enjoy a short farewell show, ‘See Ya Real Soon,’ in the lobby atrium. It starts with the characters being welcomed. Then, you’ll have about twenty minutes to greet the characters one last time. Finally, there is a short farewell celebration with Disney characters and the ship’s crew in a musical finale led by Mickey Mouse. The end of a Disney cruise is always so sad, but the final show makes it a bit easier to say goodbye!

6 – Nightlife Options for Adults

I mentioned a few options of places to relax during the day, but Disney Fantasy also offers nighttime entertainment is just for adults. Europa features bars and lounges, and space for grownups. Each venue presents a unique design, look, feel, sounds, and menu options. All venues are interconnected and convey a sense of discovery as guests move throughout the areas. Europa is located on Deck 4 aft, are open exclusively to guests aged 18 and older.

Europa venues include:

  • La Piazza – lounge inspired by stylish Italian plazas, complete with a bar inspired by a carousel, Venetian masks and a classic Vespa
  • Skyline – a chic, metropolitan “sky bar” with changing views of stunning European skylines
  • O’Gills Pub – a rollicking Irish bar with modern-day twists
  • Ooh La La – an elegant room inspired by a French boudoir
  • The Tube – a vibrant metropolitan club reminiscent of swinging London

Besides being a place for adults to get a drink and a break from the craziness of hundreds of kids all hyped up on pixie dust, the nightclub locations host many entertainment offerings such as live music, adult game show, and the very popular silent dance parties. We had a little more gas left in the tank and we weren’t quite ready for our fun to end, so after See Ya Reel Soon we headed back to the nightclub area for awhile. We knew we had a very early morning the next day disembarking from the ship, but when you’re on a Disney Cruise you need to soak up every second. We can sleep when we get home.

Chad Nykamp

Husband, father and lover of all things Disney. Like every kid, I loved Disney and the couple trips I took to Disney World in my early years are good memories. But my obsession began in 2004 when we made our first family visit. It's hard to believe that we almost cancelled the trip because it seemed like a lot of work with 3 very little kids. We were hooked by the end of the first day. By day 3 we were planning our next trip back. By day 5 we were doing the math on DVC. And by the end of the vacation everyone was crying the blues that we had to leave. Since then, Disney World has become our favorite vacation destination, a hobby and now a home. We love the detail of the story telling and the memories of time spent with friends and family.
